This is not the only mattress available in our offer, but this one has higher sides (by approx. 6 cm) and resembles a mattress more than the traditional version. On one of the short sides there is a hole through which you can put straw or other filling of your choice. It is tied with two strings.
The high linen mattress sheet has dimensions of 120x200 cm and is designed for both one and two people. It fits perfectly into the frames of beds available in our offer.
You will find this medieval mattress in two options: NS1585 - mixed standard NR1586 - hand-made standard
It is possible to adapt the model to your needs. All you have to do is to let us know in the comment section when placing the order that the size of the mattress sheet is to be changed. Then don't forget to enter the internal dimension of your bed! Without this information, the execution time of such a modification may be extended.
As a standard, mattress sheet is made of natural linen. However, it is possible to change its color. You can find the available options here!
Sources for a high medieval mattress sheet
Among medieval iconography, it is not difficult to find different types of mattresses. Sometimes they are barely visible, but more often their form is visible. An example for our mattress can be a performance located in the Nibelungenlied. Hundeshagenscher Kodex, dating from the 15th century, currently stored in the State Library in Berlin.
What was the role of the mattress in the Middle Ages?
In the Middle Ages, a mattress sheet was a place to sleep. It was a cheap and, in a way, universal solution, because in the sleeping chambers it functioned as an addition to the bed, while in poorer households it was an independent place to sleep. Due to the low weight and the possibility of folding, the mattress was also used when traveling, often as a tent equipment.
Straw mattresses were usually made of linen and had the form of a simple sack. One end was open, and hay or straw was stuffed through the hole.
