The most basic piece of medieval man's clothing, next to the shirt and braies, was the coif. It was made of the same material as the rest of the underwear. Most often, it was sewn from two parts, joined in the middle with one seam. Medieval coif in this form has just been added to our offer.

Using historical sources, we have prepared a linen medieval coif, slightly different from the product available in our store so far. It looks similar, but differs from it in construction. Instead of two, it has only one seam at the top. However, this version fulfills the same role as the original. It is worn on the head during almost every activity, e.g. when working in the field, staying in a medieval camp or during preparation for a tournament. It can be used as the first protective layer before putting on a quilted hood and a knight's helmet.

Our linen coifs are sewn from two types of linen: white or natural. However, if you need a cap in a different color, check our sampler and add information about this change in the order comment.

Historical references for a linen coif with one seam

This type of bonnet is easy to find in medieval iconography. The earliest designs date back as far as the 10th century. However, the most famous representation of one-seam coifs are those presented on the pages of the so-called Morgan Bible from 1240-1250. Similar headpieces can be found in the Book of Hours from 1275-1300.
