A metal padlock with a semicircular shackle, inspired by examples from the Middle Ages. This medieval padlock is opened with a ratchet key. This item is fully functional and can be used in various situations, usually in securing chests or doors.

To open the lock, the key is inserted into the opening, compressing the springs so they can be withdrawn to release the shackle.

Padlock in the Middle Ages

Padlocks were known even in the Roman Era - there are examples reaching the 500 BC-300 AD period. In the course of time, their design and functioning has naturally evolved.

Despite the fact that padlocks are probably Roman in origin, they became a speciality of the early Middle Ages. There are many available examples found by archaeologists. The Vikings were exceptionally skilled at making medieval padlocks – they had a lot of stolen goods to store securely!

To slow down the thieves, people in the past used to install multiple locks on doors and chests. Some treasures and armors were secured even by a dozen locks.
