A type of medieval headwear. Gremlin open medieval hood has a liripipe and it was worn from the beginning of the 15th century, mostly in England and France. This headwear is made of wool with linen lining in the same color.

Just like other medieval open hoods, Gremlin is a typical garment for a lady. It stands out with its form as it uncovers the neck, which makes it a more convenient choice for warm days. This form makes it more airy and ethereal, and thus eye-catching. On windy days, you can pin it to a fillet.

Open hood is a perfect choice with houppelande or cotehardie. We recommend wearing a contrastive set.

On special request, we can make an open hood or its lining from other fabric, like silk or brocade. If you are interested, please contact our Customer Service.

REMEMBER! to provide us your head (B1) and neck (B2) girth. We will make your headwear the FASTEST!

Open hood in the Middle Ages

The peak of its popularity falls on the 15th century. Medieval open hoods can be found on medieval iconography. One of the most popular sources from the time is Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.

Gremlin combines functionality with fashion. Open hoods of this type were finished in various ways, for example with liripipe, cutout, badges, pins, etc. Their design allows for presenting a contrastive lining and emphasizes the face of a wearer.

What are the types of medieval headwear?

Similarly to the outer garment, headwears speaks of the social status and in case of women of their marital status. In medieval iconography hardly ever can we find figures without any head wear. During all the period of the Middle Ages a hood was the most widespread head wear. Its functions were protective and sometimes symbolic, ritual or representative. Medieval headwear includes: caps, hats, coifs, hoods, kerchiefs and others. Hoods were often made of cloth, however caps and hats were made of felt.
