An early-medieval gambeson, inspired by clothes from Rus and northern Europe. Gambeson made of linen, with thin filling and linen lining. Knee-long, widened with gussets on the sides from hips. It has long, narrowed at the end sleeves and gusset at the armpits, allowing free movement. It is closed with two leather straps.
The kaftan is fitted in the upper body parts, it widens from the hips. Slit at the back, which allows riding a horse comfortably.

The kaftan and its various variants were a very common item of clothing in medieval Northern and East Europe. They were worn by both the rich and the less wealthy people. The status and wealth was shown by fabrics used to make kaftans and if they were worn over other garments or only over shirts.

The kaftan has a trim in contrasting colour on front, at the neck, bottom and cuffs. Quilted only to the lining, thus the sewing lines are not visible.

Gambesons were a cheap protection for the fighting men in the Middle Ages, but only the poorest ones used only them as their single armour. For others they were a part of a complete protective armament, providing amortization of the hit and the protection of attritions from the armour. Among padded protective elements we can find: gambesons protecting the trunk and hands, padded gloves, padded coifs and separate hoses. They were sewn from layers of a fabric. In the 13th century gambesons were long and rather badly-fitted to the figure. They were usually put over the head and buttoned only near the neck. Later, with the development of other elements of the armour, gambesons were shorter and better fitted to the body. In the 14th and the 15th centuries they were usually buttoned at the front or laced up.

- linen lining
