Based on a French iconography, the late-medieval 14th-century pourpoint will prove itself both in combat and as civilian clothing. This medieval gambeson is characterized by its low weight, natural padding and freedom of movement. Additionally, this aketon has a low-profiled collar.

The historical French pourpoint is available with several types of stitching:
• on chest, back and shoulders – arched ones,
• below the waist – horizontal, ended with vertical stripes,
• vertical quilting is also used on the sleeves.

In our standard offer, this medieval pourpoint is tied like “overcast stitching”. However, we give the opportunity to modify and replace the string with tin buttons or point tieing.

When designing the historical French pourpoint, we’ve focused on mobility during the fight; that’s why we’ve used a new sleeve pattern, called ‘inverted elbow’. Thanks to this solution, the aketon stays in place and does not limit the freedom of movement.

What does the padding of gambesons, aketons or medieval pourpoints look like?

The outer and inner layer of the pourpoint are made of linen material. The padding has been made from felt of two thickness levels.

The thicker level is used on the torso part of a gambeson (Y7b), while the rest is made of a thinner layer (Y7a). Such padding, together with a well-chosen armor, will provide the arming doublet with adequate and sufficient amortization. More information about thickness you can find here.

Woolen felt, which has been used in our historical pourpoint, has a number of properties desired by the reconstructors. Wool has a high hygroscopicity, i.e. it can absorb a large amount of moisture without feeling wet. It also provides proper thermoregulation of the body. Thanks to the use of natural materials such as linen and wool, our French pourpoint is a faithful representation of the medieval original and is fully biodegradable.
