Whelen tent is made from impregnated cotton of approx. 340g/m2 grammage, which has undergone the anti-mold and anti-rain impregnation.
This model was inspired by the 20th century tent designed by Townsend Whelen - American colonel and hunter.
Whelen tent can be described as a classic shelter for survival and bushcraft lovers with light baggage. It will easily hold up 1 or 2 persons with a small baggage. It works as perfect protection against rains or heat.
Our Whelen tent gives you an opportunity of making a fireplace by the entrance, it does not have a floor and it consists of one sheet equipped with sides and a small roof. This makes it lighter than other multi-element tents.
This type of a tent is so universal that it can be assembled in a few ways. The easiest and basic method is assembling by attaching the sheet between trees with the use of ropes or sticks found in the forest. There is also an option of montage with the use of a wooden frame (a set of fitted poles), created by yourself or ordered here on special request. Such order will be priced individually.
Thanks to its construction, Whelen tent remains light and easy to transport. Visually, it’s similar to a standard Norman tent.
Thanks to additional handles on the tent sheet, it can be assembled in a few ways. Some of them are presented on the pictures. Additional equipment, not included to the basic set, are helpful in modifying the position of walls and awning.
Measurements of the basic version:
height: ~125-150 cm
depth: ~250 cm
width: ~470 cm
Among the tent sheet, a set consists of:
- 14 tent pegs + 2 spare pegs
- a polypropylene rope of fi 8 mm - 15 m
- a bag for a tent
- a bag for pegs
The sheet (5 kg) with other accesories (3 kg) weight 8 kg!
The origin of Whelen tent
Design of this trapper tent comes from Townsend Whelen, the American hunter, soldier and writer. He was a colonel in the army of the USA and wrote numerous articles on the military.
Whelen’s great passion was exploring nature and hunting. He traveled to wild areas of North and South America.
In 1925 he designed a tent which he named Whelen lean-to. That’s where the name of our functional copy comes from.
