Houppelande is a former representative outer clothing with folds and baggy sleeves. This medieval dress is put on over the head and buttoned up under the neck (8 tin buttons in standard). If needed, tin buttons can be changed on fabric buttons, or other type from our assortment. Houppelande is made of wool with linen lining. We are giving an option of choosing the color of wool on the outside and the color of lining. The length of a cioppa in this standard reaches the ground.

There are two standards of our houppelande to choose from. In high standard, the whole product is hand sewn. Medium standard means machine sewing inside the houppelande and hand sewing (visible seams) on the outside.

Women's court clothing in the Middle Ages

Houppelande was a court outer dress worn from the 2nd half of 14th century till the 2nd half of 15th century. This type of medieval cioppa was used both by men and women. Pellanda is characterized mostly by spacious, baggy sleeves and high collar. Women in the Middle Ages used to girdle it under breasts, while men in waist. The length of female houppelande always reached the ground, however there are sources presenting the pellanda with a train. Houppelande for men could be shorter, reaching the knees.
