Liripie – part of a medieval cowl
A liripipe is a tail, usually in headwear like this medieval hood. This type of decoration in historical headwear is characteristic for 14th and 15th century. You can wear it hanging down loosely or curled around head or neck. Word liripipe comes from Latin liripipium. Authors of medieval chronicles used it to bemock fashion of that time.
Cowls as medieval headwear
Hoods were known since ancient times but gained their biggest popularity in medieval period. In the course of time, design and look of this type of headwear changed. Initially, hoods were part of coats. Later, they started to work as separate clothing. Their distinctive form came to life in the 13th century when medieval clothing joining cowls with a collar became typical for court fashion. In the following centuries, this headgear used to be formed into hat shape or later into the shape of chaperons.
