Shoes in the Middle Ages
As footwear is currently an essential part in every reenactor's life, you should remember that in the past a solid pair of medieval shoes was often seen as lap of luxury. Still, these were the prime times of the evolution of historical shoes. It became much more diversified, and first heels started to appear. Also, people started to look at shoes not only from practical side, but also from the perspective of fashion. Tips of footwear were often lengthened and curled, giving a shoe more sophisticated look. Depending on owner's wealthiness, medieval shoes could be decorated in various ways.
Depending on individual needs, preferences and social status, medieval shoes (like other medieval clothing) could vary in many ways. Knights, as people often traveling, preferred more stable and protective high lace-up shoes. For everyday routine, under-the ankle or over-the ankle historical shoes were good enough.
Our historical shoes are made mostly from plant-tanned leather. Most of this assortment is available in a few colors, so you could match them to your medieval clothing. In standard, medieval shoes have sole made from styrogum. For additional payment, there is an option of changing it for historically accurate leather sole.
